Hurricanes have the potential to cause more death and destruction to Southwest Florida than any other natural or man-made threat.
Because Florida is surrounded by warm water, the state is prone to hurricane strikes during summer and fall months. Although the Atlantic hurricane season runs six months from June 1 through Nov. 30, the peak of the season in Florida usually occurs in August, September and October.
The 2005 Atlantic hurricane season marked a record 28 named storms, including Hurricane Wilma, which made a direct hit on Collier County in late October that year.
A hurricane is a tropical storm with sustained winds of 74 mph or greater. Tropical storm winds are 39 to 73 mph, while tropical depression winds are 38 mph or less.

During the Hurricane
- Understand the difference between hurricane watches and warnings. A watch means hurricane conditions are possible in the watch area, usually within 36 hours; a warning means means a hurricane is expected in the specified area, usually within 24 hours.
- If planning to evacuate, plan to leave early. Naples has one of the longest estimated times in Florida to clear all residents from the path of a hurricane.
- Assemble a disaster supplies kit, including first-aid items and prescription medications, nonperishable food, canned goods and a can opener, at least 3 gallons of drinking water per person, battery-powered flashlights and a radio with extra batteries, photo IDs and important documents.
- When the power goes off, many residents turn to emergency generators to power refrigerators, freezers, lights, fans and other appliances. To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, never use a generator indoors or in any enclosed space. Only operate the generator outdoors in a well-ventilated, dry area away from air intakes to the home.
