Former Lely High School star Lauren Embree, a senior at the University of Florida, has been named the first three-time SEC Women’s Tennis Player of the Year.

Students and families filled the bleachers in Seacrest’s upper school gymnasium on Thursday to watch five student-athletes sign for their futures.

“Both outstanding individual players, but together they are even better. Their communication is amazing and they move together,” Sharks coach Jonas Rockhold said. “It is fun to watch.”

Lely High School graduate Lauren Embree won both her singles and doubles matches to help the second-ranked University of Florida women’s tennis team to a 4-1 victory over Texas A&M in the SEC tournament semifinals Saturday in Starkville, Miss.

The last Collier County tennis players remaining in the state tournament were eliminated Thursday.

Players from Collier high schools won the overall singles and doubles titles on the girls’ side and the boys’ overall doubles title. The overall finals pit the winners of the team and individual No. 1 singles and doubles champions.

For the second straight year, Baron Collier swept both the boys and girls tennis state championships.

Johnson has earned praise from his coach, Eric Manning, as one of the team’s most reliable and clutch players.
