Editorial: Same tragic elements can come together here

What can we learn from this?

What can we learn from the horrific traffic accident near Gainesville over the weekend?

Ten people were killed when their vehicles collided in pre-dawn darkness on Interstate 75 amid fog and smoke from a woods fire.

Survivors and even some first responders say they could not see a thing.

The same elements of that disaster occur in Southwest Florida as well. We never know when ground fog is going to be upon us in the middle of the night in chilly temperatures, and remember this is the peak of our dry season — prime time for fires.

Public safety officials should mine the Gainesville disaster for every possible tip. How well and quickly can they warn motorists?

There is this fundamental truism that most motorists already practice: when you can't see where you're going, due to rain or any other reason, pull over and stop.

How sad it seems that for some of the unfortunates caught in that ultra-darkness, there was too little time to do even that.
