Richard Giampietro, Naples
In hindsight ...
On Jan. 26, in the world's biggest department store on Immokalee Road, I passed a younger man and his grade school-aged child in the aisle.
The man I refer to was a big man, physically fit, yet a gentle giant in the way he interacted with his son.
He wore battle fatigues and had lost his lower left leg, likely while serving his country.
I wanted to shake his hand and express my sincere gratitude for his service and my sadness at his loss, but evidently I couldn't, or didn't, show the same courage he had displayed not so long ago.
So in hindsight, I write this letter, and it's likely the same letter others wish they had written as well.
Thank you, sir, for your ultimate sacrifice so that I, and others, can live our carefree lives in this glorious country.
You, sir, are a true American hero. Your son will grow up proud.
