Gov. Rick Scott signs bill regulating 'pill mills' in Florida

FORT LAUDERDALE — Gov. Rick Scott has signed a new law aimed at controlling the state's "pill mills" by penalizing doctors who overprescribe painkillers, tightening rules for operating pharmacies and authorizing a prescription-drug monitoring database.

Scott signed the bill Friday in Fort Lauderdale and was to have other signing ceremonies in Tampa and Orlando.

Florida is considered the epicenter of prescription drug abuse, with pain-management clinics supplying drug dealers and addicts with illicit prescription painkillers. Many of those people come from out of state.

The Republican governor originally opposed the prescription-drug monitoring database, calling it a waste of money and an invasion of privacy. But Republican Attorney General Pam Bondi and several GOP legislators pushed for the database and Scott eventually agreed.

JUST LOOK AT GOV. STIMULUS SCOTT

This stimulus is going to save jobs in Florida.

IF we are using the Democrats ideas why did Flordia elect a FLIP FLOP NOpublican't.

NEXT Gov. Stimulus Scott is going to take your Social Security for a failed nopublican idea.

With this logic let's charge anyone who steals a candybar with a life sentence in jail.

NO DIFFERENCE between MURDER and STEALING a
.95 item Life sentence, maybe a public hanging.

Speeding tickets are now a $5000.00 fine.

I mean if we are going to the extreme then let's make running a red light another
$5000.00 fine and 20 points on the license.

Most of the money he tacitly approved amounts to stimulus leftovers and pass-through grants that help various governmental agencies with specific tasks, such as the $41,000 that the Office of Statewide Prosecution has awarded to the Hillsborough County State Attorney to prosecute gangs. A spokesperson for Attorney General Pam Bondi, a former Hillsborough prosecutor, said the program has been effective.

Florida's Pam Bondi Joins 11 Other States to Support 'Repeal Amendment'

Attorney General-elect Pam Bondi says she wants to help restore balance between the federal government and the states. Today she announced her support of the Repeal Amendment, an amendment to the U.S. Constitution which would allow two-thirds of the states to repeal any law or regulation of Congress.

"The federal government has significantly overstepped its constitutional boundaries by enacting a health care mandate that is not only unconstitutional and an abuse of government power, but will devastate our economy, create a shortage of doctors and a loss of jobs," said Bondi. "The Repeal Amendment would create an extraordinary remedy to fight back against the most extraordinary instances of federal overreach.”

No mary jane maybe, since a vast majority already smoke, its naive and stupid to regulate something the majority of the population wants,. We tried it was called Prohibition, and it was an utter failure, like Reagan's War on Drugs, trillions poured into a sinking ship, trillions on law enforcement, justice system, and jails.

The drug companies don’t want pot to be legal, law enforcement doesn’t want it to be legal, and private jails don’t want it legal. But it needs to be, and enforce it and tax it like you do alcohol, and be done with it.

apersonwhocares writes:

i know how this will turn out. how did it turn out when we regulated or banned gambling? prostitution? street drugs?... if you don't know the answer just ask a bookie, pimp, or drug dealer. how did it turn out when we banned alcohol in the 20's?

so, we think another piece of regulation or another law is going to stop prescription drug abuse? really?

look, the sad fact of life is that some people enjoy vices that others find reprehensible. but the idea that you can control the free market with more legislation and regulation goes against anyone that believes in the logic of the free markets. when they outlawed lsd, the market created ecstasy. when they outlawed that the market created other designer drugs. the question isn't "will the market win?", it's when it does win will the product by better, safer or cheaper? and will the people be safer?

all that's been done by this law, after all the photo ops and press coverage, is create new business opportunities for drug dealers who will import these drugs from other places... yes the market always wins in the end.

perhaps one day we will realize how futile, costly and morally flawed our efforts are to have a powerful monolithic government force everyone to not take drugs, pay for sex, gamble, etc.

apersonwhocares writes:

one final thought. don't we as conservatives use the same logic when we talk about gun control? it is said that if you make guns illeagal, the only ones with guns will be criminals. well i agree and i usually use the drug war as an example. what is more regulated than drugs? and we think we can use laws to prevent criminals from getting guns? anyway i say people should be free to do as they please so long as it doesn't hurt someone else... oh by the way RON PAUL 2012!

When you make vague generalizations, don't be surprised when they are made back at you.

Was I at least close in describing you?
Which attribute?

Let's dispell your Repub rhetoric right now.
I would venture to guess that you would be wrong in guessing how I get money, my stand on guns, drugs, religion, war, abortion, the environment etc.

It's the problem we all face. The media has convinced us all to think there is no middle.

You will find me sitting firmly in it.
Besides, conflict equals web hits for these rags.

Same is true of every aspect of the media. Ratings thrive on sensationalism, not truth. The problem is people believe whatever they hear, from Dan Rather defending his use of forged documents, to Fox News arguing in court that the 1st amendment protects their right to lie. It's all entertainment, people. If you want the truth, look it up for yourself.
