In response to "fatpinkkitty" this has nothing to do with who is in the White House or crime stats or if Collier Cops are doing a good job. Of course if Sam and company had taken my advise and not left City limits they might not have been caught, s----- is as s----- does. Having said that I digress to my usual cheery and always complimenting persona. Other than budget cuts can Boss Moss justify eliminating the overnight security position at the walking pier??? Realize that the very presence of an individual who can be anywhere on that structure at anytime with a direct link to the Cops is a crime deterrent and a significant safety feature in its self. When you walk into Sunshine Ace do you really think the every present worker who greets you is just being nice or needs a job. Yeh they let the customers know there are store representatives present to assit you, ensure your safety, give advice and if your thief or thug you kinda get the idea that Sunshine Ace is not the place for you to hang out. For all the years the City of Naples had an unarmed security guard at the pier that individual served all those rolls and more. Maybe for the last three years a guard at the pier could have been informative to visitors about City attractions, coming events or provided friendly advice about things to avoid along with letting punk wanna be's like Sam and his juvenile delinquent boyfriend that the pier might not be the place to pull out guns and act tough. The Pier is an attraction posted on MILLIONS of post cards and fliers inviting people to the City of Naples but after dark at the pier your on your own because Boss Moss doesn't think public safety and information is something that's important!!! Whats more important than that??? Isn't that type of stuff part of the "Blue Ribbon Service" the City of Naples claims to provide???

Here are some budget items that Boss Moss overlooked in order to eliminate a $25,000- $40,000 pier guard position that even I think is a great and worthwhile service to visitors and residents. The Boss Moss Phoney Phone System, they removed and eliminated a perfectly operational phone system along with direct links between City dispatch, County dispatch and all three fire stations so they could install what can best be described as a malfunction prone and poor quality phone system. Its so bad that Marco Island supposedly removed the same Boss Moss Phoney Phone System within a month of his being shown the exit door. Don't know what it cost to do all that phone swapping but I'm sure it was well into the six figure range and possibly will breach a million dollars when he finally gets the boot. $225,000 to install a world class kitchen and repaint Fire Station 1 and the Fire Department Director wants to tear it down and build a new one. What about all those collapsing crap lines that TAXPAYERS had just spent $100,000's to reline only to have to spend $100,000's more to dig them up and replace them when the band aid didn't work. Maybe if all the water meters that the City uses to bill customers were working properly and not recording inaccurate but lower usage(according to Boss Moss)they could put a pier guard back into the budget. Why not eliminate the Labor Relations Mangler(Lap Dog Rog)and all those benefit. I mean just what does he do??? Oh well he did cover up(although not very effectively)a workplace assault with a deadly weapon on a City employee just about a year ago. I guess you could say he did do something but much like the collapsing crap lines and few other little didy's around the City The Lobotomy Brothers(Boss Moss & Lap Dog Rog)have delayed paying the price, but they did get rid of the pier guard. The big difference is that the public at large is paying the price of them eliminating what could be a very important and vital part of a safe and enjoyable visit to the Walking pier. Oh yeh and word is Mayor(door mat)Sorey is starting to realize how much of a real boondoggle they have made out of the cops 175 plan and how it will be compounded by doing the same thing with the Firefighter pension plan. What about all the attorneys fees the City pays out only to lose in court, Workers comp claims, labor contract impasse, labor relations issues(assaults and Civil Rights violations) boat speed zones, boat speed zones part 2, boat speed zones part 3 and return of of the boat speed zone issue. If the Lobotomy Brothers and their crew of dysfunctional Department Directors would just take a little time to read and learn the meaning of the City's "Mission Statement" goes like this "Ethics above all else, excellence in all we do, service to others before ones self" they could probably eliminate 95% of the waste and mismanagement down there and it would probably be a pretty good place to work.

GET RID OF CRIMINALS IN NAPLES!

Just for your information the pier has ALWAYS been open 24/7. There was some talk many years ago about closing it at midnight and there was a huge outcry over that. Many people like to do night fishing there and some just like the quiet solitude of being there at night.

What needs to happen is for the city manager to get his head out of his back side and place a night guard back on the pier. There were never any problems when there was a guard there. Penny wise and pound foolish. This just shows how poor the current city administration is.

Where is ole Duke when we need him.

Lets expand on your statement a little if you don't mind. Sure its normal for a 20 year old CONVICTED FELON to be on the Naples pier with an Uzi type machine pistol in his possession. Its OK DOKEY for his boyfriend, who happens to be a MINOR CHILD to have a hand gun on him as well. Naples Police Officer Barkley claims crime is very rare down at the pier. Well Officer Barkley it seems that you failed to review this incident report prior to making a statement to the press. Is he saying that crime doesn't happen down there very often or is he saying its not reported. I would even go a step further and suggest that maybe a lot of things happen at the pier and other locations around the City of Naples is not handled properly by NPD at the direction of someone a little further up the food chain, its then called a "suspicious incident" to finish the clean up. The only reason this one was leaked out is CCSO apparently became involved and it couldn't be filed under the old standby of "suspicious incident", right Officer Barkley??? This one incident has enough in it to make it a crime wave for crying out loud and all the City Mangler and the NPD PIO can say Ah Dah Gee residents and visitors this kinda thing doesn't happen down here and dah gee we don't think over night security at a 1000 long pier that's open 24/7 is very important, after all we saved $35,000 from the budget by not filling the spot. Yet they blow money on other s----- positions like a $110,000+ banafits "apple polisher" for the Fire Department when most the apples go ovver to Ft Lauderdale or NNFD to get polished and they already have three guys that seem to just drive around in $55,000, 4 miles to the gallon pick up truck delivering mail and avoiding dealing with issues at the fire stations, unless of course it serves their needs to do so. Are these people for real, the Mayor and City Council should be screaming about just how inept this appears and that if the City Mangler has to do it personally there is to overnight security of some sort at the pier. High marks for Boss Moss he save us some good cash with all those budget cuts, can you imagine if the Uzi worked and more than two people were affected and all the City Officials can do is claim its rare and that they saved money by putting residents and visitors at risk. It's not the first time for something like this and it's not going to be the last time and hopefully luck holds out and next time the gun doesn't work again. MORONS

Boss Moss called crime at the pier "pretty rare" yet another public comment of complete idiocy uttered by the WELL COMPENSATED City Mangler. Just what would have Boss Moss said if the Uzi had done a little more than "click" when "punk boy" pulled the trigger. I know, maybe he would have said "this is the first double murder on the Naples pier ever" or "a security guard would not have been able to stop the bullets" just how much do they pay Boss Moss to be ignorant. One reason a lot of crime is not reported from the pier Mr. well compensated City Mangler is that people don't go down to the walking pier at night anymore. You know why? THEY DON"T FEEL SAFE!!!! But ole Sam U. Arnold and his 16 year old boyfriend certainly felt pretty safe whipping out an Uzi and hand gun and PULLING THE TRIGGER!!!! Next the City Mangler will have those fancy cameras removed (much like Coastland Mall did) to avoid liability if someone is mugged robbed or worse on the pier. Hey Boss Moss why don't you send Lap Dog Rog down for the early shift and Attack Dog Rog down for the mid watch, that way at least you can justify Lap Dogs salary and pension benefit and Ole Attack Dog would just eat up that extra authority that comes with being a "Pier Guard". Maybe if the cops weren't out counting broken street lights for a certain City Councilman they could walk out there more often than twice a year when the fireworks are being lite up! I remember "Ole Duke" the pier guard years back, rain or shine that guy was at work, walked the pier at least 40 times a night and kept all the riff raff in line or off the pier. Now a days because Boss Moss chased all the good City employees away you don't even see a cop walk out there some nights, maybe its because the radio they share is stuck in Port Royale watching for statue thieves.

My illiterate rant is worth reading again!

How would that stop the 16 year old kid with an uzi? They are regulated by the National firearms act of 1934 and owned solely by collectors. Doing what you posted above would do nothing to stop the convicted felons in this article who were not legally allowed to even posses a firearm.

I am constantly amazed at the amount of venom and hatred so many people have for Naples. What is so horrible about this place that it engenders so many nasty remarks? I've been here 20 years and really don't know what the issue is. I've lived in some really nice places in this country and some that weren't so great- Naples definitely is in the former category. I guess some people would be unhappy no matter where they live. As far as the pier incident goes- hire back a security guard. Really, how much could that cost?

And then only criminals will have guns.

You do realize that these two thugs were breaking the law correct?

1) Broken Law #1 – a 16 year old in possession of a firearm (must be 18 years old to own a fire arm – minors may only have possession of a firearm while being supervised by an adult for the lawful purpose of training, sport shooting and hunting).
2) Broken Law #2 – Brandishing a firearm in public (illegal to anyone – permit or no permit!).
3) Broken Law #3 – Convicted Felon in possession of a firearm (Convicted Felons are automatically stripped of their rights to own firearms).
4) Broken Law #4 ? – If the UZI was fully automatic, then a Class 3 firearms permit would be required (Neither of which qualified, one being a minor and one being a Felon).

These guns were not obtained legally, so your assumption that restricting legal sales of guns to law-abiding citizens will somehow magically remove guns from the hands of criminals is false. If that premise where true, then I would not smell marijuana during rock concerts or read about any number of illegal drug busts or overdoses of heroin. Restricting guns from law abiding citizens does nothing to lower gun related crime or gun violence. D.C. has some of the toughest gun ownership laws in the entire Country, yet their gun crime and gun violence rates are some of the highest. Look back to Prohibition. Making alcohol illegal did not make it disappear; it only pushed it underground and caused an entire criminal enterprise to spring up around it.

Then there is the whole Constitutional thing! The last time I checked, the 2nd Amendment restricts the Federal Government from restricting my right to own and possess firearms for both sport and the protection of my family. You are either a complete moron or you are openly advocating for the destruction of the very Document on which our Great Nation was founded. Either way, I have no use for you!

An UZI in semi-automatic is nothing more than a high capacity 9mm hand gun. It is heavy and not very accurate. You could do far more damage with a well balanced 9mm hand gun with a high capacity mag.

In full automatic however the UZI can be devastating in close range. In order to legally obtain a fully automatic UZI, you would have to fill out all of the proper paperwork, pass all of the background checks and then you would have to purchase a class 3 firearm permit which requires being fingerprinted and a host of other information.

P.S. - The article said the UZI was recovered in the Van and the hand gun was recovered under a pile of leaves near where one of the suspects was arrested.

It is a felony to convert an UZI to full auto without a Class 3 weapons license and it is a felony to posses a fully automatic fire arm without a class 3 permit or class 3 license.
