The students from the Bonita Springs Middle School's chapter of the National Junior Honor Society were out this morning at 8:45 a.m. before school started to weed the Edible Garden. Giving a new meaning to the phrase "sweat labor," these kids were getting dirty and sweaty before their first period.
Now, if you have ever spent anytime with kids traversing the uncertain paths of peer pressure, popularity and adolescent haute couture, you will know this was an amazing sight to see these kids out weeding and nurturing the garden they helped plant earlier in the summer.
After weeding the garden, they fertilized it with coffee grounds supplied by the Coffee Mill in the Promenade. This project is an amazing example of the entire community coming together to make Bonita Springs a great place to raise kids.
News has it that the garden has already produced some edible food, and a couple of star fruit were harvested and displayed on the morning in school news. The news is another early morning activity that is opened to all serious aspiring journalists, under the great direction of Joy Copper, an Art teacher at the school. The kids write, produce, and anchor the news each and every school day.
You can see the lovely gardens if you stop by the October Carnival on Friday, October 2 from 5-8 pm.
