Take second round with grain of salt, especially on the greens

Playable Lies

I kind of worked it out the last 25 holes were just really as good as I can play, I think. I’m still making mental errors because it’s my first tournament since September.

For the most part I’m playing solidly and hitting the right shots. There were some really good holes out there Saturday with the wind. I just hit it solid Saturday and that’s the difference. I missed just a couple of fairways and a couple of greens.

On 16, I bogeyed and I misread the speed on a putt. I was off the fringe, so it doesn’t count as a three-putt. It was 30 feet and I just hit it about eight feet by. I thought it was uphill into the grain. And it wasn’t even uphill. It was level and the grain was kind of goofy. I left the 8-footer short after that so I had the grain totally misread there. All of the players are really having a hard time with the grain.

The greens have just enough speed to them in spots where you have to be careful. Friday, I knocked one by from short range and I did the same thing I did on No. 16, these things are about a foot-and-a-half to two feet faster than we ever putt. Sometimes I think it’s my old golf course and somehow nuke it.

I learned something Saturday that I never knew. Those guys were taking it right over the corner on No. 8 with a 3-wood and I’ve never gone over the corner. They both hit it way down there. I’ve been throwing 7-irons into the green and they’re throwing it over the corner, which I never even thought about doing. Now that I see how they’re playing it, that’s what I’m going to do (today). I’ve been going out to the left with a 3-wood.

On No. 17, I made birdie from about a foot. I hit it real close out of the rough on the right. I had a perfect lie in the rough, dead downwind.

The wind was just really a good test. There’s certain holes out there, Nos. 6 and 7 are just holes that you’ve got to hit shots on. Then you’ve got Nos. 10, 11 and 12 right back to back that are really good holes with the wind. And then you’ve got Nos. 15, 16, 17 are really good holes. Saturday, they were honored with the wind. No. 16 was a crosswind, so that’s a tough hole, small green, long hole.

It’s weird to see my name on the leaderboard. I just take it one day at a time. Whatever happens today, I did it Friday and I did Saturday, so I’ll take it.
